Gagra Colonnade

In the height of the tourist season, the snow-white Gagra Colonnade is one of the most visited places in the city. The structure, designed in Moorish style, consists of four towers connected by arcades.

Each arcade consists of eight arches. The majestic multi-arched construction, stretching over 60 meters, gracefully curves around the square and the elegant fountain with a sculpture of a white dove, creating a unified architectural ensemble. Its beauty invariably attracts attention not only from tourists but also from artists and filmmakers.

Why visit:

The colonnade is located in the center of Old Gagra. From here, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Black Sea and the city beach. The monument is worth admiring not only during the day but also in the evening when its spectacular lighting turns on.

Within walking distance from the colonnade are several other equally interesting attractions in the city, such as the picturesque Seaside Park, the famous restaurant "Gagripsh," and more.

Prince of Oldenburg's Castle

This castle is one of the most beautiful and recognizable architectural landmarks of Abkhazia. Built in 1902, the castle was intended to serve as a residence for Prince A. P. Oldenburg, a member of the ancient ducal family and a close relative of the Romanov dynasty. He is credited with establishing the climate resort area in Gagra - the first along the entire Black Sea coast of the Caucasus.

Today, the building is in a state of disrepair - suffering from years of neglect and damage sustained during the Georgian-Abkhaz war in the 1990s.

Why visit:

The majestic palace, rising on the mountainside amidst lush subtropical vegetation, is considered a true decoration of Old Gagra. Its architectural elements in the Art Nouveau style particularly attract attention - the red tiled roof, balconies, chimney stacks, and the tower. Although the building is closed for renovation, it is still informally visited by tourists.

At your own risk, you can stroll through the once beautiful halls, admiring the old fireplaces, the intricately patterned floor, and other remnants of former luxury. From the second floor, there is a wonderful view of Gagra. The castle is surrounded by the picturesque Seaside Park - an ideal place for pleasant walks.

Seaside Park is one of the most beautiful places not only in Gagra but throughout Abkhazia. Both local residents and tourists love to walk and relax here. Established in 1902 by architect Shervinsky, the park stretches for 6 km along the coast of the Black Sea.

Once you step here, you enter a marvelous world of tropical nature. Covering an area of over 14 hectares, more than four hundred species of plants thrive here, brought from various corners of the globe.

Why visit:

Despite the limited number of sculptures, fountains, and beautiful ponds remaining in Seaside Park, it still remains a popular place for relaxation in Gagra. Every arriving tourist would indulge themselves in a peaceful walk down the quiet alleys of this picturesque park, admiring the beauty of the plants and enjoying the amazing air filled with oxygen and the fragrance of flowers.

Among the diverse tropical vegetation, there are numerous exotic species, such as coconut palms, candy trees, Himalayan cedars, and many others.

Mount Mamdzishkha

Mount Mamdzishkha

This mountain, standing at 1873 meters, is located 6 km from the center of Gagra. The slopes of Mamdzishkha, one of the most colorful mountains in all of Abkhazia, are covered with thick groves of boxwood, fir, and beech.

A winding paved road leading to the mountain's summit, 30 km long, was constructed during Soviet times. There were plans to build a complete health resort complex with medical facilities, hotels, ski tracks, cable cars, and so on. Although these grand plans were never realized, Mount Mamdzishkha continues to attract many tourists with its beauty.

Why visit:

Along the road to the summit, viewing platforms have been established, offering breathtaking panoramas. From the first platform, at an altitude of 300 meters, you can see Cape Pitsunda, impenetrable forests, and part of the coastline - from Sochi to Myssera.

From the second platform, at an altitude of 900 meters, stunning mountain landscapes and peaks can be seen. At the third platform, at a height of 1456 meters, you can take an exhilarating paragliding flight directly to the beach. Five kilometers from the mountain peak, the road splits: one trail leads to the famous alpine meadows, while the other goes to Mount Arabica.

Fortress Abaata

Fortress Abaata
Fortress Abaata. photo by tripplanet.ru

During the early Middle Ages, the territory of Gagra was occupied by ancient settlements of Abkhazian tribes. It is believed that a fortress was established around the 5th-6th centuries here to protect against enemy raids from the Zhoekvara Gorge. Throughout its long history, the fortress of Abaata has changed hands multiple times and has undergone many alterations - it has been destroyed, restored, and augmented with new buildings.

At one time, the Romans, Genoese, and Russians made notable contributions to its architectural appearance. The last renovation occurred in the early 20th century when Prince Oldenburg decided to demolish one of the fortress walls to build a hotel.

Why visit:

Although the impressive ruins of the fortress walls have retained their historical appearance, the territory of the former strategic site looks different today. In the central part, there is a hotel. To the left of the main entrance, a picturesque cypress alley leads to one of the oldest Abkhazian temples - the church of Saint Hypatius, built in the 6th-8th centuries.

Further along, to the right of the church, is a small local history museum dedicated to the history of the fortress and the resort city. After exploring the fortress, visitors can exit to the wonderful Seaside Park or descend to the beautiful beach.

Beaches of Gagra

Mojito Beach

In Gagra, you will not find wild or private beaches. There are only public beaches and beach areas from hotels and guesthouses, which are conditionally divided into beaches of Old and New Gagra by location.

Almost all of them are covered with fine to medium gravel (though occasionally sandy patches can be found) and are accessible to both local residents and tourists, except for the beach areas of a few hotels.

Why visit:

The beaches of Gagra stretch for several dozen kilometers along the famous Black Sea resort coastline. They all have their charm and differ only in infrastructure and liveliness. The beaches of Old Gagra are ideal for a tranquil beach getaway-they are more beautiful and quieter but have less developed infrastructure.

Among the most popular is Mojito Beach, along with the beaches of the guesthouses "Energetik," "Gagripsh," and "Colchis." The beaches of New Gagra are smaller but more crowded with better infrastructure. The Central Beach with a water park and rides is the most popular in this part of the resort.

Aquapark

Today, the Gagra Aquapark is the only water park in the entire Republic of Abkhazia. It is located on the promenade in the New Gagra area. Both children and adults can find entertainment that suits their taste here.

The aquapark features cafes, bars, and restaurants where you can enjoy dishes of Abkhazian cuisine. After the attractions close at 8 PM, entertainment programs begin in the restaurants, and the aquapark transforms into a night club, where live music plays until morning.

Why visit:

Within the water entertainment complex, visitors can enjoy 9 slides of varying heights and angles, 8 pools filled with seawater and freshwater, jacuzzis with hydromassage, and various attractions to suit any taste, including traditional zigzag slides and tubes. The smallest visitors will be delighted by the shallow pool with mini-slides and fun attractions.

All the slides and pools in the aquapark are outdoors, allowing you to have fun while enjoying the panoramic views of the sea coast. After active entertainment, you can relax on free sun loungers, enjoying the seaside scenery.

Restaurant Gagripsh

"Gagripsh" is not just a restaurant; it is an architectural and historical landmark of the city and one of its main symbols. In the early 20th century, Prince Oldenburg, after visiting the World Trade Fair in Paris, purchased an elegant wooden structure there. It was disassembled and transported to Abkhazia, where it was assembled in a special way-without using metal fasteners.

In the building, a restaurant named "Gagripsh" was opened, and in January 1903, the official opening of the resort in Gagra was celebrated there. Over the years, many famous figures have visited the establishment: Nicholas II, Stalin, singer Chaliapin, and writers such as Chekhov, Gorky, Bunin, and others.

Why visit:

The restaurant "Gagripsh" features luxurious interiors, huge panoramic windows overlooking the picturesque Seaside Park, excellent Abkhazian and European cuisine, and a special atmosphere. Despite the long history of the structure, its facade and internal layout have remained unchanged.

From the second floor, which features a beautiful carved balcony running around it, you can observe the mechanism of the facade clock, which is still wound manually. A particular pride and signature dish of "Gagripsh" is the salad "Olivier" with red caviar, prepared from a recipe dating back to 1895.

Cinema Gagra

Cinema Gagra

The "Gagra" cinema is located in the old part of the city - on Primorsky Boulevard, opposite the famous Gagra Colonnade. The majestic building, constructed in the 19th century in the classical style, initially housed the Winter Theater. However, during Soviet times it was transformed into a cinema-concert complex named "Gagra."

In the left wing, where stage areas have been preserved, concert performances were still held, while the right wing housed the cinema hall. Unfortunately, artillery shelling during the Georgian-Abkhaz war of 1992-93 did not spare this architectural monument - the building suffered significant exterior and interior damage.

Why visit:

Although the cinema building, now overgrown with trees and plants, seems abandoned, it looks quite picturesque from the outside, and inside, you can still admire the luxurious interiors with stucco work and paintings.

The main entrance attracts visitors with its row of elegant columns and an antique triangular pediment, while monumental figures of sleeping lions adorn the symmetrical facade. Despite ongoing restoration work, the site is open for independent visits by tourists.

Train Station

The city railway station is located in the New Gagra area. The building was constructed during World War II in 1943. At that time, this transport hub leading to the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus had significant strategic importance. Previously, mostly freight trains ran through the station, but today all trains heading to the Caucasus and Black Sea resorts pass through Gagra.

Why visit:

The two-story building is a representation of Soviet classic architectural style. The central part of the building is decorated with three elegant arched windows, and its side "wings" hold numerous open areas.

High-quality marble, sandstone, and other expensive materials were used to finish the monumental facade. Inside, the station features arched galleries, painted ceilings, and massive chandeliers. The light and airy building harmoniously blends into the atmosphere of this sunny resort city.

Temple of Hypatius of Gagra

This ancient temple was presumably built in the 6th-7th centuries and is considered one of the oldest in Abkhazia. It is located in Seaside Park on the grounds of the ancient fortress of Abaata. The mysterious temple is shrouded in many enigmas and legends. According to one of them, around the 6th century, a Christian named Hypatius of Gagra hid from persecution in a large cave near the temple - then known as the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God.

After his death, he was buried in the temple, which was renamed in his honor. In the 19th century, the Temple of Hypatius of Gagra was not used as intended for a long time: after the Crimean War, it housed a gunpowder storage, and during Soviet times, it served as the Museum of Abkhazian Weapons. Only after renovation in 2007 was the church consecrated and resumed services.

Why visit:

The Temple of Saint Hypatius of Gagra has great cultural significance. Despite its age, the architectural appearance of the ancient structure has changed little - it represents a sample of Byzantine architecture in a Caucasian interpretation.

The church, with its narrow windows and gable roof with a stone cross at the top, was built from massive limestone blocks. The interior is characterized by simplicity and modesty - everywhere are stone floors and walls, and only the iconostasis and the gates leading to the altar create a bright spot in the interior.

Abandoned Sanatorium Georgia

One of the unusual attractions of Abkhazia is the abandoned buildings of the once magnificent Sanatorium "Georgia," which was later renamed "Gagripsh." The sanatorium is located in the territory of Old Gagra.

In the 1960s, this beautiful complex was built as an elite sanatorium for high-ranking party officials. After the collapse of the USSR and the Georgian-Abkhaz war, the sanatorium closed and gradually fell into disrepair.

Why visit:

Despite its run-down state, the sanatorium building still attracts a large number of tourists who want to immerse themselves in the nostalgic atmosphere of the departed Soviet era. The structure is noticeable from afar - even after many years, it appears monumental and majestic.

The elegant white palace fits magnificently into the picturesque natural landscape. Those who dare to visit the abandoned building can see the preserved massive marble staircases and decorative stucco and enjoy marvelous views of the seaside from the balconies.

Why visit:

The colorful maze in the very center of the resort city is an ideal place for enjoying a pleasant time with children. It has been built in a picturesque location - within Seaside Park, surrounded by ancient trees. It's always fun and crowded here. Zhoekvara Gorge

The Zhoekvara Gorge is located near the Gagra fortress. It begins in the western part of Gagra and stretches to the source of the Zhoekvara River. In ancient times, mountain tribes used this natural corridor along the riverbed to raid the fortress of Abaata from the Northern Caucasus. As a result, the Zhoekvara Gorge has repeatedly been the site of military conflicts and bloody battles.

Why visit:

For nature lovers, visiting the Zhoekvara Gorge is an exciting ecological route running along the winding riverbed through dense chestnut, boxwood, and yew groves.

Tourists vacationing in neighboring guesthouses enjoy walking here. Besides the natural beauty, several interesting historical sites are nearby: a watchtower built in the mid-19th century; stone gates, and a fortress from the 5th century.

The temple is located to the west of the Gagra ridge - just 17 km from the center of Gagra. It is easily found with a stroll toward the sea along the main street of the village of Tsandripsh. The structure, built in the early Middle Ages, was erected due to the exceptional skill of the builders.

A number of scholars suggest that the Tsandripsh temple served as a pilgrimage center for early Christians for centuries. Today, it stands as an ancient architectural monument of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Why visit:

The building of the Tsandripsh basilica, constructed in 543 AD, remained intact until the 16th century, after which it was partially destroyed by the Turks. Over its long history of nearly 1500 years, the temple has undergone multiple renovations and restorations. Today, only ruins of the basilica remain.

Despite the fallen semicircular vault, some walls and other structures have survived. During Soviet times, numerous archaeological excavations were conducted at the temple, during which stone bas-reliefs were discovered and the picturesque arches of the basilica were recreated.

Lake Ritsa

Lake Ritsa
Lake Ritsa. photo by tripplanet.ru

Lake Ritsa, covering an area of 1.27 km², is located at an altitude of about 1 km above sea level. This high-mountain reservoir was formed about 250 years ago as a result of an earthquake - a part of the Pshigishkha mountain massif collapsed, creating a natural barrier for the mountain river Lashipse.

Today, the lake is surrounded by three mountain ranges - Pshigishkha, Arikhua, and Asetuk. The water here remains crystal-clear all year round, but its color changes with the seasons: in spring and summer, the lake appears yellow-green, while in autumn and winter it assumes a clear blue hue. Another rare phenomenon is the clouds that form above the lake due to the collision of mountain winds with sea breezes.

Why visit:

The stunning high-altitude Lake Ritsa of 1.27 is one of the main natural attractions of Abkhazia. The high slopes of the surrounding mountains are covered with picturesque fir forests, and the valleys with alpine meadows. A scenic winding road leads to the lake, with paths and trails for walks along the shores.

Visitors can enjoy views of the lake and mountains from special observation points equipped with binoculars. Party dachas, which have now turned into museums with preserved interiors of that era, were once built around Lake Ritsa.

Along the main tourist routes, there are viewpoints, hotels, restaurants, cafes, wine cellars, cheese dairies, and apiaries.

Maidens Tears Waterfall

This waterfall, with its poetic name, is associated with many legends. According to one of them, a young man named Adgur and a girl named Amra fell in love with each other, but an evil witch, out of jealousy, decided to harm Amra and lured her to a high cliff. Before falling, Amra called out to Adgur and shed bitter tears.

Thus appeared the "weeping" waterfall. To see it, tourists do not have to climb mountain paths or wade through dense woodland - the waterfall stretches approximately 100 meters along the Ritsa Highway on the route from Gagra to Lake Ritsa.

Why visit:

The name of the waterfall reflects the essence of the natural phenomenon: instead of torrents falling off a cliff, a curtain of thin streams of water presents itself-the rock seems to be crying. On sunny days, the transparent drops shimmer in all the colors of the rainbow, and during the spring thaw, the waterfall resembles a fairytale instrument with crystal strings.

According to local beliefs, the "Maidens Tears" waterfall possesses miraculous properties. The cliff is always adorned with colorful ribbons - symbolic offerings to the mountain spirit for the fulfillment of wishes.

Today, the two legendary waterfalls are located 20 km apart.

Why visit:
