Karaca Ahmed Cemetery

This is a true open-air museum - a vast Muslim cemetery that is one of the oldest in Istanbul. Its name comes from the mausoleum where the righteous Karaca Ahmed, from Khorasan, is buried.

It is believed that the first burials appeared here during the reign of Murad I, but some sources claim even earlier. Not all graves have survived to this day. One of the oldest gravestones dates back to 1521. According to estimates, there are over a million graves in total. This cemetery even has a burial site for an animal - Sultan Murad I's favorite horse.
