The Ho Phra Keo Temple was built by King Setthathirat in 1565, after the capital of Lan Xang (Laos) was moved to Vientiane. For about 200 years, the building served as a royal palace. The name of the temple, meaning 'Emerald Buddha' in the local language, was chosen for a reason - until 1778, a statue of the Emerald Buddha was indeed housed here. It was then stolen by the Thais and transported to Bangkok, where it remains housed to this day.

After the Siamese forces destroyed the Ho Phra Keo Temple in 1828, it was rebuilt several times. The last reconstruction occurred during the French occupation in 1942.

In the 1970s, the Ho Phra Keo Temple was transformed into a small museum. Buddha Park (known as Xieng Khuan in Laos - 'City of Spirits') is a renowned sculpture park containing over 200 Buddhist and Hindu stone statues with religious themes, including a giant reclining Buddha statue 40 meters tall. The best photo spot in Buddha Park is on top of a three-story structure resembling a giant pumpkin.

The entrance is designed to look like the mouth of a three-meter tall demon head. An internal stone staircase leads up, providing a beautiful panorama of the entire park from above.
